What Do Baby Termites Look Like?
Like most insects, termites begin life as eggs. Once hatched, they enter nymphal stages, eventually maturing into adults. Newly hatched termites, or baby termites, are typically referred to as “larvae.”
Termite larvae are very small, typically the size of the termite egg itself. Their bodies are soft and white and they resemble smaller versions of worker termites.
What Do Baby Termites Eat?
Termite larvae feed on cellulose just like their adult counterparts. Because baby termites cannot break down the cellulose themselves, worker termites must break the food down for them first.
Do Baby Termites Have Wings? Do They Fly?
All termites live in colonies that are maintained through a caste system. Each termite will eventually be designated for their own individual role in the caste of the colony. When they are in the nymph stage, the stage to which larvae progress, they still do not have this caste designation. Due to this, they all look alike. At this point, no immature or young termites have wings. Ultimately, some nymphs will develop into adults designated as swarmers and will develop wings at that time. The other nymphs that do not develop wings will become workers or soldiers and do the bulk of the work that keeps each termite colony alive.
