Schedule Today!Termites
Termites are small insects that live in colonies with caste-like social structures. Termites are very important to the world’s ecosystem because they take the most plentiful organic compound found in nature and break it back down into dirt from which new plants can grow. So, even though we think of termites as destructive pests in our homes we can also think of them as major drivers of nutrient and biodiversity in our environment.
Are There Plants That Repel Termites?
Several plants are said to act as termite repellants, however, there is no clear research that any of these plants definitively act as a barrier to your home for termites. There are two plants that have shown some promise in studies that might work to repel termites from your home.
Vetiver
Vetiver grass, related to both sugarcane and lemongrass, is said to contain a natural repellent to the Formosan subterranean termite. Vetiver grass contains two separate chemical compounds, vetivene and nootkatone which are thought to ward off termites as well as a wide range of other pests. Scientists are conducting further research to discern if planting vetiver as a hedge around your house might act as a protective barrier to your home that will deter subterranean termites.
Catnip
Catnip oil, in lab studies, has been effective at repelling termites in sandy soil. The oil showed the possibility of reducing or eliminating termite tunneling. In high enough concentrations, catnip oil had the ability to even kill termites, though not as effectively as commercial compounds that are currently used by pest control professionals. Catnip also has the added benefit of being an herb that supports relaxation in humans and energizes cats.
Other plants
Other plants that have been said to repel termites include garlic, mint, marigolds, daisies and scented geraniums.
