What Do Termites Look Like?
Termites are typically between 1/4 and 1/2 of an inch in length. They have soft bodies with straight antennae. Different termite species come in different sizes and colors, ranging anywhere from yellow to reddish brown to creamy white to translucent.
Different Caste Members
Termites live in eusocial colonies made up of three different castes: workers, soldiers and reproductives. Each of these castes performs different roles within the colony.
Worker termites and nymphs (immature termites) are creamy to white colored with no wings or eyes and are the smallest in size of any member of the termite colony. Both worker and nymph termites resemble larvae. Soldiers look like worker termites in the body but typically have hard heads that are darker in color and have large jaws that help them fight off intruders. Reproductive swarmers, or alates, have wings and hard exoskeletons. They are often dark in color and can be recognized by their two sets of wings of equal length. These wings are also characteristically almost twice the size of its body.
