Carpenter ants share a few things with the termite: they both dig tunnels in wood and can be found carving out hollow spaces in the walls and floors of your home. Termites actually consume the wood in your home, while carpenter ants dig tunnels in the wood to get to their source of food. They both infest wooden buildings and property, or structures that have wood foundational structures. Like termites, carpenter ants are also considered damaging pests that can rack up a lot of expensive damage that you might never know about. Even though carpenter ants don’t consume the wood in your home, their incessant hollowing out of the wood to build their nests can cause just as much structural damage to your home.
What Are The Signs of Carpenter Ant Damage?
The first sign of carpenter ants in your home is often spotting scouts around your home. A carpenter ant infestation inside a structure or home is typically a sign that there is a moisture problem somewhere in your home. Carpenter ant nests are often found around dishwashers, sinks, laundry areas, and bathrooms—anywhere where there might be an accumulation of moisture or possible leaks.
You might also find carpenter ants in building materials around your home (or in the walls) such as foam insulation. They often occupy cavities such as those found in hollow doors or window frames or under porches or decks.
Carpenter ants will clean their wood galleries and make the walls smooth inside, whereas the inside of termite tunnels are filled with soil and mud. Carpenter ants also create holes through which they throw out any unwanted debris. If you have found small holes in your wood or are finding piles of wood shavings, debris and dead insects, you may have found the openings or window holes of carpenter ant nests. While termites also create discard piles of grass or debris, their pellets are the same size and shape. Carpenter ant waste looks like pencil shavings and comes in all different shapes and sizes.
