Both the warehouse beetle and cabinet beetle are two of several household pests who are closely related to carpet beetles, a significant pest of fabrics. Warehouse and cabinet beetles are considered one of the major stored food pests in the United States, and, as both names suggest, are commonly found in warehouses and other repository areas where food items are stored. Warehouse beetles infest more kinds of food than any other insect, and are also the most common beetles of this group found in homes.
Warehouse beetles and cabinet beetles can be so difficult to distinguish from one another that an entomologist familiar with both species is needed to tell the difference. Commonly, they are around 1/8 of an inch to 3/16 of an inch in length and are oval in shape. Typically brownish-black in color, both warehouse and cabinet beetles have variable patterns of pale yellow or off-white hairs on their backs.
How Destructive Are Warehouse and Cabinet Beetles?
In the home, cabinet and warehouse beetles are commonly found in stored grain products including cereals, dried fruits, seeds, candy, nuts and even pet food. Additionally, they may feed on products that are animal in origin like woolen fabrics and clothing, dehydrated eggs and dried milk. They can also be found feeding on dead invertebrate species including dead flies and ladybugs. If you have found beetles that match the description of warehouse and carpet beetles in your carpet, you likely have a carpet beetle infestation, which, though related, is a different species of beetle altogether.
Due to the large range of food that these beetles will eat, it can be difficult to eliminate a cabinet or warehouse beetle infestation. Any foods that have been infested must be discarded, alongside any fabrics, decorations, nests, and pet food that may have been contaminated. Because an infestation of this kind is wide-ranging, can be expensive and drawn out, it is best to contact a pest expert to tackle any beetle infestations in your home.
