What Are Scorpions?
Scorpions are predatory arachnids that have a very distinctive appearance that often strikes fear in anyone that comes across its path. Scorpions have a pair of grasping pedipalps (strong pincers) located at the front of their body and a long, narrow, segmented tail that characteristically curves over their backs in a forward manner. This curved tail ends with a venomous stinger which is what gives the scorpion its terrifying reputation.
Scorpions range in size from about 0.3 inches to 9 inches. They are found on all continents except Antarctica which means they can live in just about any climate.
How Did Scorpions Get Inside My Home?
Scorpions can easily crawl up walls and ceilings and are small and thin, which means that any opening in your home is an open door for scorpions to climb inside. Check to make sure that holes or cracks in the walls, siding, roof and foundation are sealed to protect your home from any small invaders. This includes your garage door, windows to your basement, backdoor, sunroom and another place that might have just enough room for a scorpion to get through.
Scorpions also like to hide in firewood or any vegetation around your home.
Should I Be Scared Of Scorpions?
You don’t need to be scared of scorpions, but it is a good idea to be wary of them. All species of scorpion, of which there are about 1,700, have a venomous sting, but most don’t pose a serious threat to humans. In most cases, when an adult human is stung by a scorpion they don’t even need to go to a hospital or receive any formal medical treatment, though it is always a great idea to call your doctor if you think you have been stung by a scorpion.
Why Do Scorpions Come Inside The Home?
Like all other insects and animals, scorpions need a steady supply of food and safe shelter. Scorpions prefer to be in warm areas, so if it’s cold outside, they will come in looking for warmth. They are nocturnal hunters who prefer to feed at night and find a nice cool place like a basement or the underside of a deck or eave to rest during the day. Check any of these areas for scorpions if you think you may have a scorpion problem. They feed primarily on insects and can consume huge amounts of food in one sitting. If you are finding scorpions in your home, you may have another pest infestation that has heretofore gone undetected. It is always your best and safest option to call a pest control specialist when dealing with scorpions. A knowledgable and professional expert will make certain that your home is not only rid of scorpions, but will also identify and eliminate any other infestation issues in your home that scorpions could be feeding on.
How Can I Protect My Home From Scorpions?
While scorpions aren’t necessarily dangerous, it is always best to call a pest control specialist to inspect your home for scorpions and any other infestations you may have. A pest control expert is trained in knowing how to deal with and get rid of scorpions in the safest way possible for you and your family.
