What Do Larder Beetles Look Like?
Larder beetles are dark brown to black with a pale yellow, six-spotted band on the front half of its wing covers. About 1/3 of an inch in length, adult larder beetles have small pincers at the end of their bodies.
Where Do Larder Beetles Come From?
Adult larder beetles spend the winter outdoors in protected areas. In the spring and early summer, these common pests will enter buildings in search of a food source on which to lay their eggs. This period lasts around three months, during which time a female larder beetle can lay between 200 and 800 eggs.
What Do Larder Beetles Eat?
Larder beetles eat animal products including dried meats and fish, pet food, feathers, skins and hides and any plant material that is high in protein.
Larder beetles will also feed off dead insects, so you may find larder beetles in dead insect piles at the bottom of insect light traps or in window sills. They will also feed on rodent or bird carcases in your walls and around your home, so you may find them in your walls, attics, crawl spaces and basements.
Are Larder Beetles Dangerous?
While not dangerous, adult larder beetles are considered pests and can damage property in your home including clothing, food and anything made of animal skins, hides or feathers.
Mature larder beetle larvae will bore into hard substrates like wood, cork and plaster to undergo the transformation to adulthood, and can do possible damage to wood and plaster in your home.
