Bumble bees are, like all other bees, social insects that live together in colonies or nests. These nests are populated by queen bees, worker bees (which are sterile female bees), and male drone bees. Unlike honey bees which build hives, bumble bees make nests in abandoned rodent burrows, under piles of grass clippings or leaves or stones, in old logs, and any other hollowed out, protected area they feel is a good place to live.
For the most part, bumble bees live in these underground, hidden places but will occasionally build a nest above ground in a wall, shed, attic or crawl space. Bumble bees themselves can typically be found in flowering plants collecting pollen from the plants, so you may find them near your home or in your garden. Bumble bees only nest through the summer and their colonies are small—around 100 to 250 bees. Their nests become inactive by the end of summer.
How To Identify Bumble Bees
The first step to getting rid of bumble bees is to make sure that your problem is with bumble bees and not another type of bee. Bumble bees can be easily identified by their tail color and their texture. Bumble bees have fluffy thoraxes and are either off-white, black and yellow or red and black, or ginger and black. Adult worker bumble bees are about 6 to 25 millimeters in length.
How To Get Rid of Bumble Bees
The best way of managing a bumble bee population is to call a pest control company, because not only can bumble bees sting, they can sting more than once. If you have noticed several bumble bees on your property but there aren’t enough yet to quite be an issue, you can take some simple precautions in order to live with your bumble bees. Bumble bees won’t sting unless provoked, so keeping children and pets away from their nests and leaving their nests undisturbed typically allows for you and your bumble bee dwellers to live symbiotically.
However, if your bumble bee issue is larger than this and you can’t feasibly ignore it, or someone in your home is allergic and you can’t risk the possibility of getting stung, call a pest control specialist to help eliminate your bumble bee issue.
