Do Roaches Build Nests?

Cockroach nests are not, perhaps, what you typically think of when you think of insect nests. Put another way, unlike bees or ants who physically build their own nests, cockroaches do not construct a structure in which to reside. Instead, they have a specific area in which a large number of cockroaches congregate, which are commonly referred to as “nests.” 

In these nests you will find a large number of cockroaches (both living and deceased), shed skins, egg cases and feces. If you are unlucky enough to come across a roach nest, you will probably also notice it emits a strong odor. How Do You Find A Cockroach Nest?

Cockroaches typically like to like to live in dark, damp, protected places that are also close to a food source. Consequently, the first places you should look are spots that fit these requirements. Take a working flashlight and check around your home under sinks, around drains, near plumbing, behind and under appliances, and any other place around your home that may not appear damp, but could be a perfectly secluded home for a roach nest such as drawers, cupboards, closets and under (or even in) furniture. 

A helpful tip: if you have checked the above spots around your home and cannot seem to find any roach nests, you can use cockroach traps to figure out where one might exist. Traps have proven to be pretty ineffective at controlling cockroaches, however, if you put traps down and notice which traps have captured more critters, it might act as a good indicator of where a nest might be close by.
