Schedule Today! How Long Do Mice Live?
In the wild, the lifespan of a mouse is, in many ways, affected by several different factors. The environment in which they live, the quality and quantity of available food and how many predatory animals live in their vicinity are all deciding factors in just how long a mouse will live. Mice, on average, live for about a year to a year and a half (12 to 18 months). Typically, a mouse will die from predation as several different animal species hunt and eat mice.
Inside your home, however, the lifespan of a mouse is an entirely different story. Mice that make their home indoors tend to have a much easier life. They typically have an abundant supply of food and they are sheltered from harsh environmental elements, including protection from most predators (even your cat can’t get to most of the mice that might live in your home). Due to these factors, house mice can live between 2 to 3 years.
The Lifespan of a Mouse
If there are mice living in your home the problem for you is not how long they live, but rather what they are doing while they are taking up residence in your walls and floor. Mice are prolific breeders and a single female mouse can produce between 25 to 60 offspring in one year. Each of these offspring take only 5 to 6 weeks from birth to reach sexual maturity, meaning that each female mouse pup can very rapidly begin to produce litters of her own. In this way, mouse infestations can quickly get out of hand.
How To Prevent Mice From Getting Into Your Home
Rodent control for your home can be difficult and arduous. Store-bought poisons and glue traps may seem like quick and effective control methods, but are inhumane and can even introduce health risks to you and your family. Poisons are highly toxic to people and can pose serious health risks to your pets. DIY glue traps are not only often cruel and inhumane, any mouse stuck in that trap is now yours to deal with, and a dangerous opportunity to introduce disease spread to you, your family members or your pets.
