Schedule Today! What Are Ground Nesting Bees?
There are several different species of ground nesting bees in the United States. Ground nesting bees are solitary queen bees that live individually and raise their own young. Because they are solitary bees, they do not form hives, but rather nest in patches of bare soil. Though they are technically solitary bees, they often nest together in the same area. You may have seen the entrances to these nests around your yard: they look like small mounds of soil a few inches wide.
Ground Nesting Bee Behavior
The thought of bees that have the capability of stinging you, living in the ground where you might accidentally step on them is a bit unnerving. But ground bees generally don’t pose a threat to you, and can actually benefit your garden in several ways.
While ground queen bees have the capability of stinging, they do not defend their nesting areas, are extremely docile and are unlikely to sting. Male ground bees can seem aggressive, but they lack the ability to sting altogether. Both male and female ground bees are beneficial pollinators which makes both the environment and your garden healthier and happier.
Additionally, while small mounds in your garden paths may be a bit unsightly, they do no harm to the soil or to your lawn and can, in fact, improve the health of both soil and lawn as their nests function as aeration holes which help water and nutrients to penetrate the soil.
Control for Ground Nesting Bees
If you feel the need to get rid of ground nesting bees despite the fact that they help with the health of your lawn and garden there are a few things to keep in mind. First, ground nesting bees are only around for a few short months and won’t make permanent homes where you have found them. Better yet, ground nesting bees need dry soil to nest in, so if you need to get rid of them, simply water the area they have chosen to nest in and they will find another area to make their home.
If you are highly allergic to all bees, or you aren’t sure what pest you may be dealing with, your best option is to call bee or pest control services near you.
