Schedule Today!What Are Pavements Ants?
Sometimes also referred to as “sugar ants,” pavement ants nest in the soil, often underneath pavement, hence their name. Pavement ants are known for burrowing underneath sidewalks, driveways and building slabs, all the while discarding the dirt onto the pavement. Due to the fact that pavement ants are so well adapted to urban and suburban habitats, they are one of the most common ant varieties that U.S. homeowners encounter near their homes.
How To Identify Pavement Ants
Pavement ants are reddish-brown to black in color. They are about 2.5 to 4 millimeters long. Pavement ants have legs which are lighter than the rest of their body and two antennae attached to the front of their head.
Pavement Ant Colonies
Like most other ant species, pavement ants live in colonies that adhere to a caste system which includes workers, alate (or reproductives) and queens. Their colonies are average in size, comprised of 3,000 to 10,000 ants. Worker pavement ants do have a small stinger and can sting humans.
A pavement ant’s sting isn’t typically painful. Instead, a sting from a pavement ant typically causes mild discomfort and isn’t usually harmless. Alates have wings and are commonly twice the size of worker pavement ants. These alates, or swarmers, usually appear in June or July.
Ants Under Your Foundation
Since pavement ants build their homes underneath and beside patios, driveways and sidewalks, they may find their way inside your home through cracks in your foundation or basement floors.
What Do Pavement Ants Eat?
Pavement ants have been known to eat just about anything. They will devour most household food including pet food and household trash.
