Schedule Today!General Overview Of Beetles
There are more species of beetle than any other insect on Earth, making the beetle the largest order in the entire animal kingdom. There are so many species of beetle that about a quarter of all known species of animals in the world are beetles. They are found all over the globe, including all continents except Antarctica. Most beetle species live on land, however, there are some beetle species that are fully adapted to aquatic environments. Beetles can range in size from 0.01 inch to nearly 8 inches long. They occur in a diverse range of colors, shapes and behaviors.
Beetle Behavior
As is true for most animals in the animal kingdom, beetles spend their days searching for food and shelter, and when possible, procreating. Beetles are known to eat a wide variety of diets. Some feed on plants and fungi, others eat invertebrates and insects, and some eat the dung of other animals. Some beetles are pests themselves, decimating crops and forests, while others control divergent pest insect populations by feeding on bugs that feed on plants and forests.
Do Beetles Have Personalities?
Scientists have known for a few decades that the particular environment in which an animal resides can have far-reaching influences on its life-history characteristics. These characteristics include things like: body size, generation time, fertility and behavior. Scientists have also begun to realize that it is not just important to study the behavior of groups of animals, but to also study the behaviors of individuals within those groups.
Perhaps because there are so many beetles in the world, scientists have begun to study whether or not individual beetles present consistent differences in their own individual behavior as opposed to each beetle presenting consistent similar behavior. In other words, scientists have discovered that beetles have their own distinct, individual personalities. Researchers believe this information will help us begin to understand beetle habitat distributions, species invasions and specific responses to environmental changes, all important clues to how beetles function, and in turn, affect ecological environments.
The Importance of Beetles
Understanding how beetles behave is of great importance to the world’s ecological health. Since beetles do encompass such a prominent part of the world’s biodiversity, it is important that we maintain beetle habitats and encourage the continued conservation of rare species. It is also just as important that we make sure that beetle species that particularly benefit from human activity do not become invasive and cause damage not only to human property, but to insect habitats as well.
If you are having beetle issues in your home or on your property, reach out to a knowledgeable pest professional. A pest care specialist will identify your particular beetle problem based on their individual and collective behavior and work with you to eliminate your beetle issue.
