Schedule Today!Baby Mice
Baby mice are pretty adorable when they’re first born, but finding one in your home is anything but cute. Mice are known to have a high breeding rate which makes them a significant pest if found in your home. Having a mouse infestation in your house can be a threat to the health of both you and your home. Mice can cause damage to the structural integrity of your home and can also put the health of you and your family in jeopardy as mice are known carriers of parasites and are spreaders of disease.
How do you know if you have a mice infestation in your home if you have found a baby mouse? Read on to find out about baby mice and mouse reproduction.
How Many Babies Do Mice Have?
One female mouse can have 5 to 10 litters per year with each litter consisting of between 3 to 14 offspring. The average size of a mouse litter is around 6 to 8 babies. Mouse pups are born without fur or ears and are completely blind. By the fourth day, mouse pups will have developed ears. Two days later, they will begin to grow fur. About 2 weeks after they are born, baby mice finally open their eyes. Mice mature quite quickly and are considered sexually mature at 6 weeks, meaning that in a short period of time, baby mice can start having more babies themselves.
What Do Baby Mice Eat?
Like most other mammals, baby mice feed off their mother’s milk for their first weeks of life. They are weaned off their mother’s milk at around 21 days. At that point, they will begin to eat whatever they can find, which, if they are in your home, means they will start to feed off any food they can find in your home. Adult mice can only live for about 2 to 4 days without food. Mice get most of their water needs filled through their food consumption, which is why they don’t last very long without a meal.
You won’t be able to rid your home of mice by starving them, though. Just a few crumbs of food are enough to feed a mouse for a while. If you have found baby mice in your home, this means there are at least two generations of mice you must now deal with.
