H2: Big Headed Ants Around The Home

Big-headed ants nest in soil and are among the most invasive species, since they can have multiple queens and reproduce year round. This makes them particularly difficult to control. Colonies can take over the landscape, meaning that pest control experts should be called in to eradicate infestations. They are most common in subtropical climates, like south Florida.

Big Headed Ant Facts

Big-headed ants are dimorphic, meaning they can come in two distinct sizes, a major and minor worker. The major workers range in size from one-eighth to one-fourth of an inch. The major workers, as expected, have incredibly large heads in relation to the rest of their bodies. Minor workers have proportional heads and bodies. Most of these ants are reddish-brown.

Ants establish trails between their nests, water and food sources. Big-headed ants can feed on a variety of foods, from garbage to plants and dead insects. They prefer sweet honeydew produced by aphids, mealybugs and scales that feed on trees and plants. Most colonies are small. Some species of big-headed ants can create supercolonies that infest an entire block, making an extermination of a single property incredibly difficult.

Big Headed Ant Habitats

Big headed ants nest in soil, making their anthills generally easy to see and find. They nest under rocks or in sand, excavated dirt or cracks in driveways. They can nest under concrete slabs and infest your home like termites, though they are not known for causing any structural damage to homes. They do cause a mess, though, when they seek out food and are not appealing in places where your family resides.

To prevent colonies of big-headed ants from invading your home, seal off food containers and dog foods to prevent the smells from attracting them, and clean messes as quickly as possible.

Should I Contact A Pest Control Specialist For Big Headed Ants?

Most colonies are small, easy-to-find and easy-to-treat. To get rid of big-headed ants, use ant baits and treatment methods. For larger-scale infestations, it will be best to contact a pest control expert to help you get rid of the problems.
