Schedule Today! What Is An American Spider Beetle?
American spider beetles are small beetles that belong to the family Anobiidae. American spider beetles, perhaps not surprisingly, are named for the fact that they look like small spiders (or maybe small mites) because of their long legs and large, rounded abdomens. American spider beetles can be found around the globe, including the Northern part of the United States where they thrive. They can be found near any and all food sources. Packaged or stored food in pantries in homes and businesses are just the beginning. The American spider beetle will eat anything from leather to books to any other dried food or animal product so warehouses, museums and libraries may all need to be careful of a potential infestation.
What Does An American Spider Beetle Look Like?
An adult American spider beetle ranges from 1.5 to 3.5 millimeters in length. It is dark reddish-brown to black in color with a shiny, round abdomen. The rest of the body, including the head, thorax, legs and antennae are covered with pale yellow to cream-colored hair.
What Does The American Spider Beetle Eat?
Similar to other spider beetles, the American spider beetle eats nuts, beans, seeds, spices, cacao, cereals, fruits, mushrooms, herbs and many other various foodstuffs. It has also been known to eat other organic produce including leather and other animal skins, bones, feathers, feces, silk, wool, books and dead insects.
Are American Spider Beetles Dangerous?
American spider beetles are not dangerous to humans, but are considered nuisances because they will chew holes in packaging and can damage fabrics. They can however pose a large threat to food industry businesses, as an American spider beetle infestation can render large amounts of product unusable, resulting in costly damages.
