Schedule Today!Bee Traps
Bee traps are typically designed to capture bees, rather than kill them. Because bees are so vitally important for our ecosystem and are mysteriously reducing in numbers, many people are looking for ways to eliminate the threat of bees on their property or near their home without killing or hurting the bee population.
Carpenter Bee Traps
Carpenter bees live differently than honey or bumble bees. Instead of building hives, carpenter bees burrow and tunnel into wood to build nests. The idea behind a carpenter bee trap is that it is made of the same kinds of soft wood that are particularly attractive to carpenter bees. Holes are drilled into the wood at the bottom at a specific diameter and angle so as to resemble the holes that carpenter bees naturally make. In this way, the trap mimics a typical carpenter bee nest which is naturally inviting to a carpenter bee.
Once they enter the trap, the angle of the holes is designed to cut off any light source for a bee. Carpenter bees instinctively fly towards light to exit their natural hives. Without this light source, the bee is rendered trapped in the container and unable to escape.
Homemade Honey Bee Traps
It’s pretty easy to find lots of different plans and blueprints for making your own homemade honey bee traps on the internet. One popular method for creating bee traps involves cutting an empty liter bottle around 1/3 of the way down. The top piece is placed upside-down into the remaining part of the bottle acting as a funnel to bring bees in and then trap them inside the bottle. Other popular DIY honey bee traps are more intricately involved and require lumber and a circular saw to enact.
Are Bee Traps Effective?
All of these kinds of traps run the risk of trapping bees inside containers where they will most likely die after a few days, if not sooner. This defeats the purpose of trapping bees, rather than using more traditional or straightforward methods of killing bees, as these trapped bees will likely die anyway. If the traps are made incorrectly and bees are able to escape your homemade trap, you run the risk of producing aggressive and threatened bees which can make an unpleasant situation a dangerous one.
The most efficient, humane and effective way to control bee populations, keeping both you and our ecosystem safe, is to contact a bee or pest professional near you.
