Schedule Today!Freezing Bed Bugs To Get Rid Of Them
So you’ve discovered that you have bed bugs in your home. You’ve tried many things to get rid of them and they are just not working.
You want a way to get rid of bed bugs that doesn’t use chemicals or heat. Will freezing temperatures be the thing that finally solves your bed bug problem?
Can Bed Bugs Survive Very Cold Conditions?
Bed bugs cannot survive if exposed to temperatures of 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below for more than four days. At this temperature, the liquid inside freezes and they effectively freeze to death.
Despite this, relying on very cold temperatures to eradicate a bed bug population is neither practical nor effective. Most of the places that bed bugs hide cannot be reached with anything that might create these conditions.
You might be able to fit bedding, books or other small belongings into your freezer, but if any of the bed bugs are insulated just enough to keep them at or above that 0 degree threshold, your efforts will have been for nothing.
Keeping them in the freezer for longer than the four-day period won’t kill them either. At any temperature slightly above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, bed bugs are able to enter into something resembling hibernation and can remain that way for quite a while. Additionally, it’s probably not the best idea to place bed bugs inside your freezer near your food.
Bed bugs do not like the cold, however. Colder temperatures in your space in general may slow the growth of any infestation as it takes them longer to digest their meals. This means more time in between feedings and theoretically fewer bites for you. As this is not really an effective means of bed bug control, your best bet is to leave the bed bug abatement to the pest pros.
