Schedule Today! What Do Bed Bugs Eat?
Bed bugs feed on the blood of warm-blooded mammals. Their preferred blood meal is from humans, but they have the ability to bite pretty much any animal including household pets like dogs and cats, as well as rodents and even birds.
Though it is possible for bed bugs to attack dogs, typically bed bugs will only go after non-human household residents if an infestation becomes severe. At that point it is an issue of overcrowding. If there are too many bed bugs and not enough food, they will find a meal wherever they can, including your pets.
In general, however, bed bugs will choose a human over any other mammal at any given opportunity.
Are Bed Bugs Dangerous To Dogs?
Bed bugs cause irritating bites (though not in all people as some people have no reaction to bug bites) but do not transmit or carry diseases of any kind.
Bed bug bites are as irritating to dog as they are to humans, but bed bug bites will not harm or kill your dog.
What Does A Bed Bug Bite Look Like On A Dog?
On dogs, bed bug bites, for the most part, look like they do on humans. In the same way that you would find the classic pattern of bites on the skin in groups of two or three formed in a straight line on yourself, you will find these same bite patterns on your dog.
If your dog has long hair or a thick coat, it may be difficult to find bites on your dog’s skin, but you might find them on ears. Similarly to human reactions, dogs can also get bed bug rash from scratching itchy bites too intensely.
Can Dogs Bring Bed Bugs Into My Home?
Since dogs can bring fleas into the home causing an indoor infestation, it might seem like they could easily do the same with bed bugs. Bed bugs don’t live on your dog the way that other insects like ticks, fleas, lice and mites do. Bed bugs do like to hitchhike into your home via luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture so it is possible that they could travel inside your home on your pets as well.
